China deploys record 244 government vessels around Taiwan in July as maritime pressure escalates

Taiwan Coast Guard data cited by The Straits Times showed 244 Chinese coast guard, research, and other government vessels operating around Taiwan’s main island in July, up from 55 in June and 30 in May. A further 152 vessels were detected during the first 21 days of August. Analysts said the activity may support maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare, while also increasing concerns about blockade or quarantine preparations.

The sharp increase in Chinese government-vessel activity is a meaningful escalation in grey-zone pressure and may inform research into blockade or invasion preparation. However, the report explicitly describes activity below the threshold of an invasion and provides no evidence of an offensive intended to seize and control Taiwanese territory by December 31, 2026.

Topic Brief

Whether China starts a military offensive meant to take control of any part of Taiwan by 31 December 2026. That is a high bar. A blockade scare, a flyover, or a speech is not enough. The market needs an offensive intended to establish control. Watch PLA exercises that look like rehearsal, closures around the strait, and official US or Taiwan alerts. Anything short of that offensive is still No.
