July PCE inflation rose 3.7% year over year, with core PCE at 3.3%
The July PCE price index increased 0.2% month over month and 3.7% year over year. Core PCE also rose 0.2% monthly and 3.3% annually, while real personal consumption expenditures were essentially flat.
Persistent inflation well above the Fed’s 2% target makes aggressive easing less likely and could shift views toward fewer 2026 cuts in the “How many Fed rate cuts in 2026?” market. The flat real-spending reading provides some evidence of softer demand, but the inflation data are the more direct signal for the cut count.
